Monday, November 28: Fukuoka City: On our way to the University

On our way to the National University Corporation Fukuoka University of Education, I was surprised at the way stores advertise. The signs looked to me like funeral arrangements. From the bus, we could see the country side. In some areas it reminded me to my native land of Peru. We were leaving big city and entering rural areas. Before arriving to the university, we made a lunch stop at a nice hotel. The gardens at the hotel were beautiful. The food was good and the company interesting. There were 19 people in our group, mostly younger than I. They were talented and friendly.

On the bus, our tour guide, Meg, introduced us to our official translator, Mikey and they both taught us a few introductory sentences. We were to introduced ourselves and our working title in Japanese. Meg decided to teach me how to introduce myself as a high school teacher because she did not know how to translate Service-Learning Director without having to go to a long explanation.

Meg also told us a few details about the Fukuoka University of Education. It is a national university which was government subsidized until last year. Since a year ago, this university is a private corporation. The tuition is $5,000 per year. It is very competitive to become a teacher in Japan
