Monday, November 28, 2006: Fukuoka University Tour

Posted by Picasa As a language teacher, I was very interested in the way they learn how to teach Japanese and English. I did not have a chance to ask the question directly, but based on observations, they follow very strick government directives leading to the entrance examination to college. I wish I have asked how do they evaluate good teaching. Oh, well, I will see examples and have an opportunity to ask the questions when I visit the schools.

How much money teachers make in Japan?
If my notes are accurate, teachers are consider civil servants. 1/2 of their salary is paid by the city and the other 1/2 by the national government. 180,000-190,000 to begin with ranges of 400,000-500,000 according to the years of experience. What I did not write write in my notes is if the salaries were in yen or dollars. I will contact my group to clarify. I also wrote that public school teachers salaries are higher.
